The Legend of Danau Toba
A Traditional Folktale from North Sumatra, Indonesia
Long ago in North Sumatra, there lived a poor farmer who worked alone in his fields every day. He had no wife or children, and his only companions were the fish he caught in the river. One day, while fishing, he caught an extraordinarily beautiful golden fish. To his amazement, the fish spoke to him in a human voice, begging to be released. The farmer, though surprised, kindly let the fish go back into the water.
Later that evening, a beautiful woman appeared at his door. She revealed that she was the golden fish he had freed, transformed by magic. Grateful for his kindness, she offered to become his wife, but with one condition: he must never reveal her secret origin to anyone, or a terrible disaster would befall them.
The farmer agreed, and they married and lived happily together. Soon, they were blessed with a son named Samosir. The boy grew to be strong and healthy, but he had one troubling flaw—he was lazy and often disobeyed his parents. His mother would prepare lunch for him to take to his father in the fields, but Samosir would eat it all on the way and arrive with nothing.
One day, after Samosir had once again eaten all the food, the farmer's anger finally exploded. In his rage, he forgot his sacred promise and shouted at his son, "You are indeed the child of a fish! You behave just like your mother, that fish!" The moment these words left his mouth, dark clouds gathered in the sky. His wife appeared, tears streaming down her face, deeply hurt by his betrayal.
"You have broken your promise," she said sorrowfully. "Now you and this land will face the consequences." She took Samosir and began to run. Suddenly, the ground beneath the farmer's feet began to tremble and crack. Water burst forth from the earth, flooding the valley rapidly. The farmer tried to escape, but the water rose too quickly. The entire valley was submerged, forming an enormous lake.
The farmer drowned in the flood, while his wife and son disappeared forever. The rushing waters created the vast lake that exists to this day.
The great lake formed by the flood became known as Lake Toba (Danau Toba), the largest volcanic lake in Southeast Asia. In the middle of the lake, there is an island called Samosir Island, named after the farmer's son. To this day, the legend reminds people of the importance of keeping promises and controlling anger, for words spoken in rage can bring devastating consequences.
